SUMMARY:Practical Tools for Treating Patients with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities

Dental professionals often lack the training and supports to serve these patients well. This session will provide an overview of the IDD population and contextual issues that affect oral health\, and introduce 9 practical tools that dental practices can use in their typical practice workflows to improve the safety and effectiveness of interactions with patients with IDD. The tools are printable checklists\, forms\, and illustrated fact sheets that can improve preparation for visits\, communication\, and effective follow-up. Grimm is Senior Manager of Training and Inclusive Care Initiatives at the Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC). In this role\, she combines her passions for inclusive healthcare and public health to address the needs of individuals with IDD and aims to create a more equitable healthcare system. In her role\, Rachel uses her background and experience to lead projects and portions of larger\, more complex programs. She builds and manages relationships with coalition members\, including self-advocates and care partners\, provides direct support\, engages in research\, evaluation\, grant support\, advocacy\, and other initiatives that support IEC's organizational goals and mission. Rachel earned a Master of Public Health in Health Promotion from George Washington University. Prior to her role at IEC\, Rachel served as the Manager of Health Programs for the National Down Syndrome Society\, where she advanced priorities related to aging and caregiving for individuals with Down syndrome.
