2025 ADEA-AAWD Distinguished Scholar Nomination

Sponsored by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the AAWD–ADEA Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins Distinguished Scholar Award honors the legacy of Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins, the first African American woman to earn a dental degree in the United States.

This $1,500 award recognizes an outstanding student member of the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) community who has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing gender equity in dentistry and healthcare. The recipient will exemplify leadership, advocacy, and a dedication to fostering respectful and supportive learning and professional environments within the oral health community. Preference will be given to students who intend to pursue a career in academic dentistry, oral health research, or public health with a focus on expanding access to care and supporting new pathways into the profession. This award supports the next generation of leaders committed to strengthening the future of dental education and oral health.

Award Amount: $1,500 with an additional up to $500 travel stipend to attend the AAWD Annual Conference

This award is open to current student members of AAWD. ADEA membership is encouraged but not required.

  • Attend the 2025 AAWD Annual Conference

The Ida Gray Nelson Rollins Award will be presented during the AAWD Awards Dinner and Gala at the 2025 AAWD Annual Conference, September 5 - 6, in Baltimore, MD.
