Recognizing Dr. Mary Martin, past president of AAWD and SFS
The American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) proudly announces a resolution honoring Dr. Mary E. Martin, 2019-2023 President of Smiles for Success and twice Past-President of AAWD. This resolution highlights Dr. Martin's trailblazing contributions to the dental community and beyond. Learn more about Dr. Martin's leadership from incoming Smiles for Success President Dr. Kady Rawal:
On a cold winter day about a decade ago, I met the then President of AAWD at the Yankee Dental congress in Boston. She was the epitome of grace, kindness and humility. I introduced myself and welcomed her to the trischool AAWD chapter meeting in Boston. Her speech to the students of the three dental schools in Boston got a standing ovation- she talked about the importance of organized dentistry, volunteering, and what it means to be a woman in our industry among other things. She was very generous about sharing her wisdom as a dentist in private practice, an industry leader and an educator. Every sentence she spoke uplifted every student in the room and left them with a sense of purpose. A student walked in late and asked, “I missed most of that speech, that is a phenomenal presenter up there on the dais-what’s her name?” “That’s the legendary Dr. Martin”, a colleague responded.
Dr. Martin has been my mentor ever since. She has served selflessly and has inspired so many of us to serve our profession and volunteer in anyway we can. She has been the President of AAWD multiple times, the President of SFS and has been honored with countless industry awards. She has truly represented women dentists in every walk of life. Having known her for a decade I can truly say that there aren’t many leaders like her today. She has given endless hours of her valuable time to organized dentistry including the last few years guiding the SFS board during the turbulent times of the pandemic.
Simply thanking her for her constant support and leadership will never be enough so I’ll take this opportunity to thank her for being a trailblazer! A big thank you to the ‘legendary’ Dr. Martin for being such a powerful source of inspiration for all of us and for her years of service.
Thank you, Dr. Rawal, for your touching tribute, and thank you, Dr. Martin, for everything you have done and will continue to do to support AAWD, SFS, women in dentistry, and women nationwide.
